The Arts Link mission…

The Music Institute of Chicago's ARTS LINK program has brought classroom music experiences, professional development opportunities, and outstanding performances to nearly 26,000 students and their teachers since 1996. The ARTS LINK program is designed to make the arts a relevant part of education, both for the intrinsic contribution of the arts to the quality of life as well as their value in enhancing learning in other subjects.

The ARTS LINK program is committed to:

      -  creating meaningful partnerships with public schools through professional  development activities, mentoring, and curriculum innovation

      -  providing arts opportunities for public schools with limited access to such resources

      -  developing partnerships with institutions of higher education by providing professional development activities to students in the field of education

Arts Link professional development offerings…

MIC's Arts Link program offers professional development workshops throughout the school year. An approved provider of Illinois State Board of Education re-certification credit, MIC's professional development workshops are led by experienced professionals. Workshops focus on the methods and materials of arts integration as well as development of creative processes.

The Twenty-First Century Arts Integration workshop focuses on the fundamentals of arts integration. Participants discuss models of arts integration while exploring creative processes in sample arts integration activities.

The Curriculum Connections workshops focus on a variety of themes. Curriculum Connections workshops are held before MIC concerts in Nichols Hall and the Dempster Street Theatre. Participants in these workshops explore methods and materials for arts integration that before attending a live performance.

The Cultivating Creativity workshops provide classroom teachers with the opportunity to develop arts processes in music, drama, dance, and visual art. Participants in these workshops explore methods and materials while taking part in the creative process.

Arts Link classroom partnerships…

The Arts Link program collaborates with Chicago suburban schools to provide arts integration experiences to elementary classrooms. MIC's Arts Link teaching artists partner with classroom teachers to implement arts integration units. Classroom partnerships are subsidized by MIC and grants; programs are available at little or no cost to schools. Schools can custom-design partnership topics with our Arts Link teaching artists, or choose from our set programs (click on the link below to view sample units).

In 2006, Chris Hasselbring, MIC trumpet faculty, developed a unique hybrid instrument: a modern trumpet modified into a valve-less, “historical” trumpet or “hose horn.” This innovative and inexpensive instrument is made with a scrap trumpet and vinyl tubing and serves as an excellent introduction to brass playing for young students.
