The Four Modalities
Art Therapy
Art Therapy is an approach in which the art processes, product, content, and reflections are used to mirror a client’s development, aptitude, personality, interests, and concerns. Through the art-making experience and therapeutic relationship, clients express and examine feelings, learn about cause and effect relationships, improve problem-solving patterns, promote social skills, develop responsibility and independence, cope with symptoms, and enhance self-esteem.
Dance/Movement
Dance/Movement is based on the belief that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected. The psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process furthers the emotional, cognitive, social, and physical integration of the individual. Dance/Movement therapists help clients improve self-esteem and body image, develop effective communication skills and relationships, expand their movement vocabulary, gain insight into patterns of behavior, and create new options for coping with problems.
Drama Therapy
Drama Therapy uses creative expression, dramatic process, and performance to help clients achieve symptom relief, emotional and physical integration, and personal growth. Shaping live, recorded, or written forms of theater and film in a therapeutic context provides insight and healing, and promotes internal, systemic or social change. The use of metaphors and imagination in the theater experience enable individuals to build self-esteem, develop problem-solving skills and learn coping skills.
Music Therapy
Music Therapy sessions are designed to restore, maintain, and improve the mental and physical health of our clients. Therapeutic music experiences are shaped to address the needs of each individual, which may include self-expression, impulse control, or coping with life’s struggles. For others, therapists shape the experience to address pain management, physical coordination, and learning.
